It is hard to justify ourselves economically without seeming to attack the social democrats' economic ideas. Therefore, the line generally taken in US propaganda, is the apparently sensible one of playing down the differences between US capitalism and noncommunist socialism...We talk of modifications to a basic system which we believe in and do not bother to defend, because we take it for granted. But the audience in the undeveloped countries does not understand the basic system...It mistakes our advocated modifications, concessions, and criticisms for our system...Political Democracy is not enough...that is at best an isntrument for the achievement of economic and social democracy...that is to say a society in which no person has too little and no one too much...There exists no longer any excuse for too little food and clothing for anyone, or inadequate medicak and hospital care, or poor shelter in unsatosfactory neighborhoods...We are not poor relations...We have much to offer, recognizing that we have much to receive in return...
